In Exodus 21:5,6, we read of yet another love law. If a bond servant married a wife, he could not legally take her away with him after he had served his contract with his master. He could keep his wife only if he stayed with his master in permanent servitude.
Then, if he agreed, his ear would be pierced with a tool fastening him to the wood of the doorway. The scar would be always there, in the ear and in the door, and it would tell everybody, “I love my wife and have given myself FOR her, so I can give myself TO her.”
That is the parable of the love affair of God with humankind. Jesus gave Himself at the cross FOR US so that He could give Himself TO US.
The stab-marks are on His hands and feet for time and eternity – the only man-made thing in heaven. That is what everything is about.
God is love. That is why we were born, to be loved and love. To know the love of all loves is the secret of all secrets.
Know that, and you possess the answer to the meaning of life.
A loveless Gospel is a contradiction: a sea without water, sun without light, honey without sweetness and bread without substance.
