0

In Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, a church has been demolished that was targeted by the government. The pastor of the church, who was streaming the demolition on social media, was also arrested.

The Cuban State Security brought machinery and bulldozers to the Assemblies of God Church in the Abel Santamaria last Friday and destroyed the church.

Christian Solidarity Wolrdwide (CSW) said that the church has been threatened since 2015 in spite of the fact that the denomination is the biggest in Cuba and is legally recognised by the Government.

Pastor Alain Toledano recorded the government attack on the church and broadcast it on Facebook through his mobile phone.
He dropped the phone when he was approached by police in civilian clothes. although the video was cut, the bulldozers and the church members singing could be heard in the stream.

Pastor Toledano, a leader of the unregistered denomination the Apostolic Movement, was the arrested and taken to the Motorizada Police Station. According to CSW he is being kept incommunicado.

According to the government, the demolition is part of the creation of train tracks, however CSW said that the church was the only building to be demolished.

No church services in England due to lockdown

0

There will be no church services for month in England, starting from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 2nd December.

The Prime Minister did not mention Places of Worship but did say: “From Thursday until the start of December, you must stay at home. You may only leave home for specific reasons.”

The Government website later clarified saying:

“Places of Worship will be closed, unless they are being used for:

  • Funerals
  • To broadcast acts of worship
  • Individual prayer
  • Formal childcare or where part of a school
  • Essential voluntary and public services, such as blood donation or food banks
  • Other exempted activities such as some support groups”

The lack of information about religious gatherings at the press conference caused many church leaders and members to be frustrated as their questions were not addressed, however other sectors such as hospitality, did get an explanation on how the lockdown would affect them.

Bishop of London, Rt Rev Sarah Mullally said “We will study the detailed regulations when they are published and seek clarification on how this may affect public worship.”

As the information about the national lockdown was leaked into the media, the press conference was made on Saturday evening instead of Monday.

The lockdown, includes four Sundays, churches do have the permission to open for private prayer.

John Stevens, national director of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) suggests that churches should organise a service for Wednesday 4th November before are restricted from seeing each other. He added that he felt churches’ value to society “is simply not matched by government/public/media assessment.”

Face-to-Face with a Machete

0

In Grenada there are usually no busses running on a Sunday. So we usually go to the members’ houses to wake them up and pick them up for church by foot.

On an average Sunday, the temperatures are pretty high, and with our Sunday clothes we walk down the streets to look for the members. Most people also live of the general bus routes.
The people who we go and look for on a Sunday often do not want to come to church, some of them leave their houses early in the morning to avoid us.  Although they would have confirmed their attendance a few days beforehand.

Now one Sunday, I went to look for a young man and I can honestly say that my life was threatened. It is not uncommon in Grenada to see people walking around with cutlasses or machetes.
As I was trying to “anagkazo” the young man and encourage him to come to church, his father came outside. His father cornered me and threatened me to leave his son alone and he said that if his son does not want to go to church, I shouldn’t force his son. He was swinging the cutlas and came right up to me, face-to-face.  I honestly thought that he was going to do something to me as I could see the rage in his face. Just because I was trying to “anagkazo” his son, and his son wasn’t having it.

I left and walked away, I felt so discouraged as I was walking back to church (which was a 20-minute walk). There were also no busses, at the time we only had one church bus and the bus was on the other side of town.

I was sweaty, hot and so discouraged as I stepped into the church.

As I reflect on it now, it is only by God’s Grace that I was not harmed that day. Although I was discouraged, I was encouraged to not give up applying “anagkazo” and to pray more, by the Grace of God the church is growing!

Book review: “Why you act the way you do”

0

We often ask ourselves why a person behaves or reacts the way they do. Or why we have certain reactions toward a situation. Don’t look no further, because this week’s book explains it all.

Tim Lahaye decided to find and answer to why people act they way they do. He delved into the study of temperaments and distinguished four types. In this book he looks at four different temperaments and explains how it affects the daily life of a person.

He explains how temperaments have an effect on the emotions, spiritual life and relationships. He also shows how certain traits can be improved and controlled.

Sit down, relax and enjoy this excerpt!

Chapter Nine: How to deal with Fear and Anger

“What you are emotionally is what you are!” may be too strong a statement to be true, but it’s close. We are all such emotional creatures that our emotions can influence every area of our lives—for good or bad. I have noticed that whenever our emotions conflict for a length of time with any other area of our being, they eventually triumph.

Consider the power of emotion to influence the other three most important areas of life—mind, will, and body. No matter how intelligent a person is, when he gets emotionally upset he cannot think in an orderly fashion. Emotions can break his concentration and stifle his creativity. Some people’s minds are totally dominated by their emotions. I well recall a professional scholar who had achieved world recognition at the age of twenty-seven. But his bad marriage kept him so distraught, fluctuating between anger and depression, that he squandered his potential and retired with less prestige and position than he had at twenty-seven.

Everyone has had the experience of letting their emotions impair their judgment How often have you asked, “Why did I buy that car, house, dress, etc.?” You knew better, but you did it anyway. You made an emotional decision. I wish I had a dollar for all the people who asked, “Why did I marry him? We have nothing in common.” Now you can see why I say all
emotionally made decisions are bad decisions. The good life is one in which your mind controls your emotions, never vice versa.

The same, however, is true of your will. I don’t care how strong-willed you are, if conflict between your will and your emotions lasts long enough, your emotions will win. That’s why the Bible tells us to “flee youthful lusts” and sins. Our emotions are particularly powerful between the ages of fourteen and twenty-four. That is why the devil uses society, education, drugs, friends, and amusements on our young people during those years. He knows how vulnerable they are to making bad lifetime decisions when they are most emotionally combustible.

Physically it is the same. Doctors tell us that 65-80 percent of all illnesses are emotionally induced. What do they mean by that? Very simply, most people in our country ruin or break down their health long before necessary by indulging bad emotions for long periods of time. Good emotions seem to have a healthful effect on us; bad emotions destroy us. The Bible
says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Prov. 17:22, NIV).

Christian bookstores in China take ‘Jesus’ off book covers to avoid censorship

Two Christian organisations had to remove the word ‘Jesus’ from their resources in order to avoid China’s internet censorship laws.

The Christian Chinese online bookstore, Tianfengshuyuan, on Chinese social media platform WeChat had to change the covers and descriptions of their books to remove the references to Christianity.

They are using Chinese pinyin writing to replace ‘Christ’, ‘Jesus’, ‘Christians’.

The bookstore replaced all Chinese characters for “Christ” with “JD,” as in pinyin Christ is written “ji du”,  or completely removed “Christ” from its books.
In the book title of “Walking with the mother country-patriotic stories of Chinese Christians,” ‘Christians’ is covered with colour blocks (Source: China Aid).

Fuzeng Xing, Dean of Chung Chi Seminary of Chinese University of Hong Kong, wrote on his Facebook page: “In their official WeChat store, not only does ‘Christ’ become ‘JD,’ ‘Jesus’ also becomes ‘YS,’ and ‘Bible’ becomes ‘SJ.'”

China Aid said stores are covering other religious terms like “God” and “Lord” with coloured blocks.

The Christian Council of China and the Three-Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Churches of China are both official government-sanctioned religious organisations and they are prohibited from selling Christian books under Chinese law.

In 2018, the Chinese government banned the Bible from all online booksellers throughout China.

China Aid said: “Unlike Buddhist and Islamic books, as the “Holy Bible” does not have an ISBN in China, regular bookstores do not sell Bibles there. People can only buy them legally from government-sanctioned “three-self” churches, Christian Council of China stores, or the Three-Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Churches of China scenes.”

Zuoan Wang, head of China’s national religious affairs bureau, said in 2001: “The printing and distributing of the Holy Bible is under a special condition. We delegated the whole thing to the Christian Council of China and the Three-Self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Churches of China. It’s like granting a ‘special privilege’ to them.”

At the beginning of this month a Chinese Christian bookstore owner was sentenced to seven years in prison for selling unapproved imported religious publications.

“Freedom to worship is given by God, not government” – Pastor McLennan

0

After police shut down the service at New Hope Community Church in Llanrumney, Cardiff. Pastor Mclennan came out to say that it is not moral and legal for the government to order places of worship to lockdown to the public during the lockdown.

On Sunday evening, the police showed up at the service after they have received calls from neighbours. When entering the service, the congregation were told that they were gathering illegally and that they had to continue worshiping at home.

Pastor McLennan said it was an upsetting moment for some church members and believes the government shouldn’t have the right to stop public worship.

“It was quite distressing for many of them,” he said, “One of our older ladies, she actually went home and what she said to us is she cried all night long.Worship is something that’s given to us by God. It’s not something that’s actually given to us through government, that’s given to you by your Creator.”

“One of the things in Wales is you can’t sing.  The Christian faith is one that singing has always been a part. We have an entire book of the Bible given towards singing, it’s the centrepiece of the scriptures.”

The church went along with the police order, but Pastor McLennan will probably have another service coming Sunday.

“We’re not a lawless kind of people. We’re not out riding and destroying things but we wanted to gather, and certainly we should have the liberty to gather.”

The church has put the Covid -19 safety protocols in place for the safety of their members. The 150 member church holds three services every Sunday in order to obey social distancing rules.

“We support all faiths in Wales and have not stopped people from worshipping, but we face a very serious situation; people are dying every day as a result of coronavirus. We need everyone to work together to make this firebreak successful if we are to prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed and even more people losing their lives over the weeks and months ahead.” – Welsh Government.

“We are absolutely aware of the serious impact loneliness can have on individuals, and we are determined to do everything we can to support people through these difficult times. We have made changes to our regulations to allow people to form an “extended household” if they live alone, whilst our Looking Out For Each Other campaign offers advice about how we can support others.”

South Wales Police said: “Officers followed the policing style which we have adopted throughout the pandemic of explaining the rules and encouraging people to comply. Officers moved outside the church to allow five minutes of prayer after which all those present left. No fixed penalty notices were issued.”

“We know civil restrictions are frustrating and disheartening for people, but by following them, we can all play a part in protecting our communities and the National Health Service.”

Last week a group of Christian leaders in Wales asked to First Minister Mark Drakeford to review the restrictions in placed and they also mentioned taking legal action against the Welsh Government for an “extreme interference” of the Human Rights Act.

Thousands gather to worship in Washington D.C.

0

35.000 Christians from all over the United States gathered on Sunday evening to worship on the National Mall to intercede for the nation towards the pandemic and elections.

The gathering was part of Sean Feucht’s nationwide tour called “Let Us Worship”, the event was the 45th place the musician had led worship. He has been to places where discord have manifested earlier this year such as Seattle, Minneapolis, and Portland.

Source: Urbana Student Missions Conference

Feucht explained from the stage that the movement was partly a reaction to the shutdown of churches in California, particularly towards prohibiting singing. These measures, he said, have caused many in the Church to react in fear and intimidation but the Church should be made up out of the least fearful people.

Those who drove or flew to the event emphasised the importance of prayer and worship given the current political and medical climate

Gail Hawkins, a pastor at New Life City church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said: “Something struck a chord in me that I needed to be here this weekend,” she said, “so we just followed the lead of God and we came.”

“And the timing of the event, we just know that God’s at work. And we feel like we’re in the west [part of the country] where we’re separated from the seat of government but we’re not separated because we’re all on one accord and we’re all praying and seeking passionately the hand of God in this nation.”

“And it felt like ‘for such a time as this’ that we had to be here,” she said, referencing Mordecai’s words to Queen Esther in the book of Esther.

As worshipers sang “Way Maker” by Sinach, Rhoda Mehl from Rosemount, said she felt that the spiritual significance was “breaking the heavy yoke of the heavy [spiritual] chains that were binding and suffocating the nation.”

Book Review : Faith Secrets

0

During this season, where Covid-19 is raging through the world, human rights are being compromised and people are being faced with death.
It is faith that has the power to make one endure and overcome all the tests, temptations and dangers that the period brings along.

The perfect book for this season is “Faith Secrets” by Evangelist Dag Heward-Mills. The book gives a better understanding of what faith is and how it is the key to please God. As Christians, we know that by pleasing God, we will be rewarded as we keep his commandments (1 John 3:22).

Enjoy the following excerpt of “Faith Secrets”:

“Your Faith is your life!”

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY HIS FAITH.

Habakkuk 2:4

NOW THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Hebrews 10:38-39

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and THE LIFE WHICH I NOW LIVE IN THE FLESH I LIVE BY THE FAITH of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

 Galatians 2:20

All through the Scripture it is clear that the life you live is the real revelation of your faith level.  A person who throws himself into fulltime business and occasionally gives an offering is at a certain level of faith. Another person throws himself into fulltime business and regularly pays tithes reveals yet a higher level of faith.

Many people think that to have faith is simply to confess that they possess many earthly possessions.  This is a warped and perverted understanding[…]’

‘Faith is your life! The life you live is the faith you have! If you live your life out in full-time ministry it is because of the faith you have.

If you live your life out as a missionary in a foreign country, it is because of the faith you have. You believe that eternity will reward you far more than any temporary rewards on this earth.

If you live a life of doing earthly politics it is because of your faith in politics and human achievements. If you live your life out as a businessman, it is because of your faith in money and earthly achievements. Your life reveals your faith. Your life is an expression of your beliefs!

What you do with your life reveals what you really believe in. If you continue to quarrel and harbour grudges, it is because of your beliefs in the way to rectify things. Your ability to forgive and leave things to God reveals how much you believe in God and His Word. Your whole life is an expression of your faith in God. If you live your life singing secular music to secular audiences, it is because of your believes. The life you live is an expression of your faith.

Your life is your faith! Your faith is your life!

As Apostle Paul Said, “The life I now live, I live by faith of the Son of God.”
