THE CONSEQUENCE OF CHARACTER

SCRIPTURE: And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses…And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. Joshua 7:24-25

THOUGHT: Character has consequences; both negative or positive character has consequences. The spirit of greed and materialism is one hindrance to an enviable destiny. When greed or materialism is at work in a life, destiny cannot be fulfilled. It was greed and materialism, which is the love for money, that cut short the life of Achan. He saw a Babylonian garment and he could not refrain from taking it. When the children of Israel entered to possess Jericho, he took what he was not licensed to take.

What was the consequence?

He did not only die, but his sin caused the death of his family members. The people brought him out with his sons and daughters and all his properties, stoned them to death and set them on fire. The lesson to learn from here is, ungodly character does not only affect the person with such lifestyle but the people around him. You see, character has consequences; both negative or positive character has consequences. There are people who have been favoured in life because they were related to people of positive character. And there are people who had died, not because they committed any sin, but because they associated with people of negative character. This is the reason why when an armed robber is on the watch list, the security agents also look for his friends and family members to arrest them. Achan’s sin implicated the lives and destinies of his family members. Beloved, refuse to die or kill the people around you because of negative character. Rather, live right and let your right living be a blessing to people around you.

Remember this: Character has consequences; both negative or positive character has consequences.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Always ask God to purge you of any negative lifestyle.
  2. Give yourself to prayer always so you can maintain positive character.

ACCESSING ANSWERS TO PRAYERS

SCRIPTURE: Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Matthew 6:8.

THOUGHT: In God, answers exist before questions, responses exist before requests. It has been established that confidence in prayer is key to competence, courage and conquest in prayer. 1 John 5:14 says, And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: When you lack confidence in prayer, you cannot receive answers to your prayer. In our study today, I will give you two bases for our confidence in prayer:

  1. God is not ignorant of our needs

Matthew 6:8 says,

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. This means, the Father is not ignorant of the needs of His children. This is one basis of our confidence in prayer. When we pray, we do not pray to a God who we try to convince of our needs. The Father already knows the things we need before we ask Him.

This implies that God expects us to ask Him even before we make our requests. Whatever we are planning to ask Him in prayer, He is expecting it. This is exiting!

2. In God, Answers Exist Before Questions, Responses Exist Before Requests

Isaiah 65:24 says,

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

This means, in God, answers exist before questions, responses exist before requests. God promises to answer us before we ask. So, answers exist before questions, and responses exist before requests are made. So, prayer is not an attempt to convince God of our needs, rather, it is an avenue to connect to God’s response to our needs.

Beloved, when you equip yourself with these truths, you can pray with great results.

Remember this: In God, answers exist before questions, responses exist before requests.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Always convince yourself that in God, answers exist before questions, responses exist before requests.
  2. Approach God with the confidence that He is not ignorant of your needs.

They say Pagadian City is the “Place of Prayer,” but for years, my prayers felt like they were hitting a brass ceiling. When I heard that Dr. Paul and Dr. Becky Enenche were bringing the Healing and Deliverance Crusade to our shores this February, I didn’t just want to attend—I wanted to encounter.

Standing in the middle of a massive crowd on a humid Tuesday night, I realized I wasn’t alone. Thousands of us were there, stretching as far as the eye could see, our voices rising like a single tide during the worship. There is something about the sound of a Filipino crowd singing in one accord that shatters every weight in the atmosphere.

The Word and the Fire

When Dr. Paul Enenche took the stage, he didn’t start with a soft sermon. He spoke with a lion-like authority about the “Life-Transforming Power of God.” As he began to pray, you could feel the shift. It wasn’t just emotionalism; it was tangible.

I came there carrying a heavy burden—a medical diagnosis that had been a shadow over my family for months. The spiritual atmosphere over the Zamboanga Peninsula has reached a fever pitch as the Pagadian Healing & Deliverance Crusade sweeps through Pagadian City. SCRIPTURE: If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she. Esther 1:19.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: One reason why many Christians are without influence is the bankruptcy of godly character.

It has been established that people of character are people of influence. People of character have influence with both men and God. You see, one reason why many Christians are without influence is the bankruptcy of godly character. Some Christians continue to shout in prayer without answers, others are mocked when they talk about Jesus to people. What they do is different from what they preach. This is why so many Christians have no influence. Show me a man or woman of character and I will show you a person of influence, influence with men and God.

What happened in the Persian Empire when King Ahasuerus put up a feast? Queen Vashti, his wife, also put up her own feast, as if it was a competition. During the king’s feast that lasted for one hundred and eighty (180) days, the king sent for the queen, but the queen refused to honour the king’s invitation. What an insult to the ego of this man! It looked like her popularity, notoriety or fame entered her head and stole away her humility. I asked myself the question, the ‘queenship’ she was proud about, who gave it to her? Who made her queen?’ The person who gave her the position and the name asked her to come but she refused. And so, she was banished from the throne. Vashti lost influence over 120 provinces by the bankruptcy of character, while Esther gained influence by the display of character. The lesson here is, refuse to lose influence in life; build your influence by upholding quality character. 

Remember this: One reason why many Christians are without influence is the bankruptcy of godly character.

  1. Make up your mind never to lose your influence in life.
  2. Continue to maintain godly character to scale higher heights in life.

PRAYER: Father, make me a person of impact and influence. Help me with the grace to main godly character Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

THE DISCIPLINE OF UPRIGHTNESS

SCRIPTURE: Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?  He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Psalm 24:3-5.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God is not in short supply of Blessing and resources; He only lacks faithful and righteous people.

Some time ago, a man was convinced of God to quit the business he was doing. The business was giving him millions of Naira monthly, but it was not a clean business. It was a crooked and fraudulent business.  He told me that even though he got money in millions of Naira weekly, he did not know what he was doing with it. This is because crooked or fraudulent money has no future; it is like the wind that you cannot hold in your hand. He could not even account for the money. 

So, he decided to obey God, and left that business completely. He told God, “O Lord, from this moment forward, any money that is not clean, I won’t touch it.” When he made this decision, he became stranded for a while: no business was coming his way. But somewhere along the line, someone called him and said, “Can you do this kind of job?” And the caller did not know that the job was in line with the man’s profession or field. The first business he abandoned had no bearing with his profession. And this was how God helped him. You see, the last time I saw him, he brought a job that he got which was in billions of Naira. And I told him, “You have seen nothing yet.” He told me, “This is so much.” I told him, “God is not in short supply of the blessing. He only lacks faithful people.” Beloved, can you see the faithfulness of God? I want this to sink deep into you: God is not in short supply of the Blessing and resources; He only lacks faithful and righteous people. When God sees faithful people, he deploys His resources towards them.

Remember this: God is not in short supply of the Blessing and resources; He only lacks faithful and righteous people.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Like the man in our story, evaluate yourself and repent from any form of crookedness and ungodliness you may be involved in.
  2. Ask God for the grace to live right.

PRAYER: Father, I repent from any form of ungodliness and crookedness. I receive the grace to embrace the discipline of righteousness, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer is one of the most basic practices of the Christian faith, yet it remains one of the most powerful. Simply put, prayer is communication with God. It’s how believers speak to Him, listen for His guidance, and stay connected to His will.

Throughout Christian history, men and women who were deeply used by God all shared one common habit: a strong prayer life.

Prayer Is the Foundation of a Strong Christian Life

Many prominent Christian leaders have emphasized that prayer is not optional for believers. Bishop Dag Heward-Mills has repeatedly taught that prayer is the backbone of spiritual growth and ministry. He often explains that no Christian can rise above their prayer life. According to him, spiritual strength is directly connected to time spent in prayer.

This truth applies to every believer, not just pastors. Prayer keeps us spiritually alive. Without it, our faith slowly weakens, no matter how active we appear outwardly.

Jesus and the Example of Consistent Prayer

Jesus Himself showed the importance of prayer. He often withdrew from crowds to pray alone, sometimes early in the morning or late at night. If the Son of God needed regular time in prayer, how much more do we?

Well-known teachers like Charles Spurgeon stressed this point clearly. Spurgeon once said that he would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach. His ministry was deeply rooted in prayer, and he believed prayer fueled every true work of God.

Prayer Shapes Our Character and Our Calling

Prayer does more than bring answers. It changes the person who prays.

Many pastors have shared that their clarity, humility, and direction came during quiet moments with God. David Oyedepo often teaches that prayer aligns believers with God’s purpose and helps them walk in obedience. Through prayer, Christians learn patience, discernment, and dependence on God rather than on their own strength.

Prayer humbles us. It reminds us that we need God daily, not just in times of crisis.

Prayer Sustains Believers in Difficult Seasons

Every Christian will face trials. Prayer doesn’t always remove hardship, but it gives strength to endure it.

Reinhard Bonnke, known for his powerful evangelistic ministry, spoke openly about how prayer sustained him through opposition, illness, and spiritual battles. His public ministry was visible, but his private prayer life was where true strength was formed.

For everyday believers, prayer becomes a place of comfort. A place where fears are laid down and hope is renewed, even when circumstances don’t immediately change.

There Is No Substitute for Prayer

Programs, church activities, and Christian content can be helpful, but they can never replace prayer. Many respected pastors warn against becoming busy for God while neglecting time with God.

Bishop Dag Heward-Mills frequently teaches that spiritual dryness often begins when prayer is neglected. Without prayer, Christians may still attend church, but their hearts slowly drift away from intimacy with God.

But prayer is not about performance. It’s about sincerity.

God listens to honest prayers, even when words are simple. A short prayer spoken in faith can be just as powerful as a long one. What matters is the heart behind it.

Making Prayer a Daily Habit

Prayer is meant to be part of daily life, not limited to church services or special moments. Many great men of God built consistent prayer habits over time, not overnight.

Even a few minutes each day can make a difference. Over time, prayer becomes natural, like breathing. It becomes the place where guidance is found, burdens are released, and faith is renewed.

Final Thoughts

Prayer is not a religious obligation meant to burden believers. It is an invitation to walk closely with God.

The lives and teachings of respected Christian leaders remind us of this truth: strong Christians are praying Christians. When prayer is neglected, faith weakens. When prayer is embraced, faith grows.

If your prayer life feels inconsistent, don’t give up. Start again. God is always ready to listen.
