Christian charity helps 14,000 people during the pandemic

0

A Christian charity has disclosed the number of people it helped during the pandemic, as the UK marks two years since the first COVID lockdown.

Acts 435 revealed it met the needs of 14,000 people struggling during that season, equivalent to £1.6 million in help.

They saw a big increase in donations through their website.

Jenny Herrera, executive director at Acts 435 said: “That is our story behind the huge challenges of the pandemic. Just as people found themselves in need, others rose up to support them.  The needs almost doubled overnight, but so did the donations to meet those needs.”

The charity, which was launched by former Archbishop of York, Most Rev Dr John Sentamu in 2010, works through a large network of churches to provide direct help for those in poverty or facing crisis.

As the cost of living soars, Katie Greene, partnerships director at Acts 435, told Premier they are already seeing the impact it’s having on families across the country.

“Just reading through the requests on our website you can see that there’s just more and more requests that reference the rising cost of living. And it might not be that specific need is for gas and electric but actually they are putting more money on their gas and electric metres, which means they’re unable to provide school shoes for their child or put food on the table.”

People can share their specific needs with an Acts 435 representative, which are later posted on their website. The needs are then crowdfunded by donors who seek to help.

Specific requests might include white goods, school uniforms, gas and electric tops, as well as many other essential items.

World Council of Churches urges Christians not to forget refugees from outside Ukraine

0

The World Council of Churches is urging people not to forget about refugees fleeing from countries aside from Ukraine, as they praise Christians for their response to the crisis.

It’s believed more than 10 million people have fled their homes following the Russian invasion; many have arrived into the surrounding nations, including Poland, Romania and Moldova.

Many churches have placed themselves at the forefront of the crisis, opening their doors to displaced Ukrainians seeking refuge.

Peter Prove, Director of the World Council of Churches, said: “Everybody is called to respond appropriately to human suffering.

“In particular, suffering occasioned by conflict and crisis of the dimensions that we see in Ukraine, where we have – according to the latest estimates – 10 million people, one quarter of the entire population of Ukraine, already displaced.

“With 3.5 million of those have crossed the borders to seek refuge elsewhere.

“As always, the heaviest burden falls on the immediately neighbouring countries; countries in the region, have received the largest volume of refugees.

“Churches, civil society and ordinary people are rising to the occasion and offering support wherever they can, in whatever way they can.

“There’s more that we need to do in this case, but also, I think, in every other such case and that’s the real challenge that we have to address in this context.

There has been an extremely warm and hospitable response to refugees from Ukraine, all around the world, and I wish that refugees from other places – from different ethnic or racial, or religious groups – could also receive the same warm reception.”

10,000 trauma kits have been delivered to Ukraine

0

Thousands of trauma kits are being sent to people caught up in the fighting in Ukraine.

Christian Aid has donated £1m towards civilian first aid kits in the war-torn country, including 10,000 trauma kits.

The trauma kits are being distributed by partner Crown Agents, which has people on the ground in Ukraine.

Christian Aid said the distribution of individual first aid kits had been made a “top priority” by the Ministry of Health.

“We are incredibly grateful to Christian Aid for its donation that will help save lives,” said Crown Agents CEO, Fergus Drake.

“Some members of our Ukrainian team are still in Kyiv, bravely delivering support to the Ministry of Health.”

Crown Agents is working with the Ukrainian Ministry of Health to distribute the kits.

“We also have our satellite offices in Lviv and in Poland and Slovakia to help manage our response to this crisis,” Drake added.

Christian Aid is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee, which has raised over £200m in its Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Christian Aid interim CEO, Patrick Watt, said: “The British people want us to respond swiftly inside Ukraine after witnessing the appalling suffering of Ukrainian civilians.

“We’ve done that today in a way that is tangible and meets an urgent need.”

Church leaders plead for action to address the rising cost of living

0

Church leaders are urging the UK and Scottish governments to urgently tackle the cost of living crisis as food, energy and fuel prices soar.

In a joint appeal, the Church of Scotland, Scottish Episcopal Church, and Roman Catholic Church urge government ministers to “set aside” their political differences and come up with a joint solution to the crisis.

They warn that low-income families are especially at risk from inflation and spiralling costs, and will be left to choose between heating and eating.

“The cost of living is rising fast,” says the letter.

Energy bills are expected to increase significantly in April, and inflation is pushing up the cost of essentials, including food.

“This will hurt low income families more than most and push more people into deep poverty, creating for some the grim choice between eating or heating.

“These are not luxuries, they are the very basics.”

Lord Wallace, Moderator of the Church of Scotland General Assembly, Rt Rev Hugh Gilbert, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, and Most Revd Mark Strange, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

The letter expresses concern about the impact of poverty on children and praises the work of charities supporting the poor and vulnerable in spite of “a surge in demand and financial challenges of their own”.

“We urge both the Scottish and UK Governments to set aside political differences and come together in a spirit of pragmatism and compassion to seek effective solutions to this very serious and worsening situation,” they said.

SOURCE: CHRISTIAN TODAY “We call on political leaders to listen to those who have lived experience of poverty and to follow this engagement with the creation of conditions necessary to support people out of poverty and to prevent people falling into poverty in future.”

Bush and Clinton visit a Ukrainian church together, declaring that “America Stands in Solidarity” with Ukraine

0

Two former U.S. presidents from different political parties visited a Ukrainian church on Friday to show “solidarity” with the Ukrainian people.

According to posts on their social media accounts, former Presidents George W. Bush, a Republican, and Bill Clinton, a Democrat, visited Saints Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chicago together. They laid flowers outside the congregation.

“America stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine as they fight for their freedom and their future,” an Instagram post from Bush said.

A tweet from Clinton said, “America stands united with the people of Ukraine in their fight for freedom and against oppression.”

Each social media post included a video showing the two men standing side by side, bowing in prayer outside the church. The video notes that the United States has had diplomatic relations with Ukraine since 1991, when it became independent of the Soviet Union.

The flowers, a speaker in the video says, “represent the struggle for freedom, which today are the colors of blue and yellow – blue for sky, yellow for wheat – as Ukraine is the breadbasket of Europe. And now Ukraine is the citadel of fighting for freedom.”

Both presidents “worked to support Ukraine’s democratic institutions,” the video says.

Bush said in a February statement that Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine “constitutes the gravest security crisis on the European continent since World War II.”

“The American government and people must stand in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people as they seek freedom and the right to choose their own future,” Bush said in February.

We cannot tolerate the authoritarian bullying and danger that Putin poses. Ukraine is our friend and democratic ally and deserves our full support during this most difficult time.”

Clinton, in February, also released a statement supporting Ukraine.

“I stand with President Biden, our allies, and freedom-loving people around the world in condemning Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine,” Clinton said in February. “Putin’s war of choice has unraveled 30 years of diplomacy and put millions of innocent lives in grave danger, with the potential for mass civilian casualties in and huge displacements both within Ukraine’s borders and beyond. The world will hold Russia and Russia alone accountable, both economically and politically, for its brazen violation of international law. I stand with the people of Ukraine and am praying for their safety.”

Clinton served as president from January 1993 to January 2001, with Bush following him from January 2001 to January 2009.

Respected Prophetic Pastor Urges Church to ‘Pray Up’ for Miracles and Breakthroughs in Tough Times Ahead

0

The war in Ukraine, the pandemic, shortages, and high prices have many asking what’s happening in the world and how God is at work in the midst of it all.

Pastor Joshua Giles, a respected apostolic and prophetic minister, recently told CBN’s Christian World News that in addition to wars and conflict, there would also be miracles and breakthroughs for the body of Christ and that the church should stand strong in faith and prayer.

And so the Lord said to me in that prophetic word that in the midst of the chaos, He would still get glory out of the situation and that we would also see a period of miracles and breakthroughs. And so he told us in that message not to panic and to continue to pray that things would be lessened and the agenda that the enemy has would be shut down,” the minister told Christian World News.

Giles, who also serves as pastor of Kingdom Embassy International in Minneapolis, Minn., said he first shared this word with his church after spending time seeking the Lord prior to 2022. He’s also shared it on his global prophetic forecast seen by thousands around the world on Facebook every week.

Going into the year 2020, Giles said the Lord told him there would be a decade of shortages and challenges. The high prices, empty shelves, and long gas lines will continue and even worsen in the days ahead, but the church should prepare and expect to see miracles of provision.

“He said to me for us to not lose hope in the midst of those things. So, we can use biblical wisdom to prepare, but at the same time, we can put our faith and trust in Him and know that we’re going to see Him provide for us and care for every one of our needs, and so that’s what I’m standing on even as things continue to unfold in the world. I’m excited because I see God moving in the midst of it, “he said.

Giles, who wrote the book The Rise of the Micah Prophet: A Call to Purity in Prophetic Ministry, said that while some might not be spiritually prepared for the days ahead, now is the time for God’s people to begin calling upon the Lord and studying His Word, because the church will face pressure and will need His strength and presence not just to endure, but to thrive.

“I feel that there are many in the church that are not ready. I think some are being caught off guard, possibly due to prayerlessness and I believe that this is an opportunity and even a crucial time for the body of Christ to return back to Jesus Christ and to begin to seek Him more,” he told Christian World News.

“And we must be prayed up because I believe that we’re going to see pressure and even in some areas we’ve been seeing it already where persecution is being placed on the church,” Giles continued. “But, when we look in the book of Acts, we see that anytime pressure was placed on the church, they grew and expanded and multiplied and so they became victorious no matter what they saw come against them and I believe that that’s the same thing we’re going to see today.”

“So we can prepare by making sure that we’re grounded in the word of God, making sure that we’re praying and staying connected to Him and that’s the way that we’re going to not only survive these times but thrive in the midst of them,” he concluded.

‘Jesus Fed Them and Then He Ministered to Them’: Multiple Churches Help Drivers with Gas Giveaways

0

Americans nationwide have felt the strain of fueling up their vehicles as gas prices have surged over the past few months.

That’s why multiple churches across the region have partnered with gas stations to help alleviate the burden with either discounted or free fuel.

West Point Baptist Church of Hattiesburg, MS teamed up with three local gas stations on Saturday by taking one dollar off each gallon of gas, WDAM News reports.

“Pastor (Marcus) Cathy was aware of the rising gas prices as well as inflation, and he wanted to make a difference, make an impact. And one of the ways we sought to do that was to roll back the gas prices,” said West Point church member Jamieson Magee. “We partnered with three local gas stations to see how we could do that and to bring some needed relief at the pumps.”

Despite some drivers having to wait a while to get the gas, everyone was grateful for the kind gesture.

“People just feel like they’re getting a breath of fresh air,” said local resident Frederick Chestnut. “We just thank God for the community and we thank God for this organization that gives back to the community.”

In Chicago, New Life Covenant Church Southeast partnered with a Shell Gas Station which agreed to give out gas free-of-charge for one hour on Saturday.

Senior Pastor John Hannah told CBS News that it was an answered prayer to be able to help those in need.

“I basically stood in front of my church and said, ‘Guys, we want to bless 200 cars,’ and asked a certain number of people if they’d give us $25, and they gave it. We raised it right there on the spot, “Hannah explained.

One church in Alabama also held a gas giveaway Saturday and provided $25 worth of free fuel per car.

WSFA News reports that volunteers with Fresh Anointing House of Worship came out to the MAPCO station in Montgomery to assist as many drivers as they could.

“The word actually got out and that’s what we wanted, was to be able to be a blessing to the people and to the community,” said church pastor Jeremiah Andrews. “So, to see the lines, we were very happy with the turnout that we have today.”

Andrews added, “We just want to love you and give what we can back to the community.”

Pastor Brian Carn with Kingdom City Church (KCC) in Charlotte, NC spent $10,000 of his own personal finances to fund the “Gas on God” event on March 12.

The church shared on its Facebook page that over 300 people received free gas, along with grocery vouchers and gift cards.

“Well, Jesus fed them and then ministered to them.” “So, right now the food is gas,” Pastor Carn pointed out. At the end of the day, it’s a blessing to be a blessing to God’s people.

The next day, KCC showed a video of the event to demonstrate how God’s love was present that day.

“Once we got here, you feel the Holy Spirit around us and this kindness. You could feel His Spirit just move you,” one woman said. “Speaking with people prior to even getting up this far and getting your gas, praying with the people, it’s earth-shaking.”

Another driver, who drove 25 minutes to receive the free gas, thanked the church for their act of kindness.

“The lines really weren’t long,” she said. “I just really appreciate everything you guys have done for me and everyone out here today.”

According to AAA’s website, the national average for gasoline is $4.25 per gallon, up 72 cents from a month ago.

Pastor arrested in Ukraine as risk of Christian persecution grows

0

A pastor is reported to have been arrested in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

According to the charity Release International, the pastor, who is an evangelical, was taken away and there have been moves to arrest another pastor who has gone into hiding. Other pastors are said to be on blacklists for arrest.

Andrew Boyd from the charity told Premier that as leaders of evangelical churches, the pastors are targets as they are seen to be patriots and leaders of the people: “Obviously, Vladimir Putin comes from a background as a former KGB officer from the Soviet Union, which was officially an atheist state, but Putin has embraced very publicly the Russian Orthodox faith.”

“Now it may be cynical to say this, but there is a religious nationalism that is going on here in forging and shaping a new identity for a nation.

“It’s the same kind of thing that we see happening within China and other places. We see it happening in India too. But there is a growth in religious nationalism around the world, which is highly intolerant.

“If you’re a Christian leader, your first authority or first responsibility is to God, Jesus Christ is Lord. It puts Christ above the king, above the Emperor, above leaders.

“So we’ve got evangelical and Protestant churches who are declaring that Jesus Christ is Lord who are not part of the Orthodox system, which is very much hand in glove with Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin.”

Andrew Boyd says that in areas such as Luhansk- which came under Russian control in 2014- the authorities have closed many Protestant churches and have banned many Christian books.

Release International warns religious freedom could be a casualty of war if Russian forces gain further control across Ukraine: “These are people who are considered to be beyond the control of the Kremlin.

“So we’ve seen Protestant Christians discriminated against, churches shut down, raided all kinds of things, the church has been driven underground, in the areas of Ukraine that have been taken over by Russian separatists.

There’s no reason to think that they would be doing anything different if they extend their control of Ukraine, and certainly the news that’s come in today, of an evangelical pastor being arrested, another one being searched for – who made something of a miraculous escape – just confirms those fears.”

“In areas of Ukraine, which have been seized by Russian separatists, there has been for quite some time a degree of persecution taking place, it’s very, very easy to overlook.

Most Protestant churches have been banned in those areas and some books have also been banned, including quite remarkably, the original Gospel of John, books by Charles Spurgeon, books by Billy Graham as well.”

“Pavel’ Release International’s partner in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, said: ‘The entire territory of Ukraine is under fire.

“There is no safe place and the goal has been to sow panic everywhere. Our hope is in the Lord.”

Christians are living out Jesus’ teachings as Ukrainians flee invasion

0

With little more than the clothes on their back, hundreds of Ukrainian women and children wait hours in line to cross into Poland as part of the largest movement of people in Europe since World War II.

They shuffle their feet quietly, even apprehensively, toward an unknown future in an unfamiliar country.

They’re stunned when they arrive. Volunteers have taped Ukrainian flags in their car windows and signs in Ukrainian reading, “free rides to shelter.”

The drivers take the refugees to the Baptist church in Chelm, only a few kilometers up the road where people from around the world — Poland, Latvia, England, the United States, to name a few — are offering a place of safety and security for a few hours, few days or as long as they need it.

Families sit in stunned silence in an impromptu reception area where church volunteers tell the refugees the church has free food, drinks, showers, and places to sleep. The congregation even has a set-up children’s area where they can play with bubbles or watch educational videos projected on a screen.

“What we’re seeing is a movement of love and generosity across this nation. Poles are opening their doors and arms to Ukrainians. They are taking them into their churches. They are taking them into their homes. They are feeding them. They are caring for them,” said Marek Glodek, president of the Baptist Union of Poland.

“This is what Jesus calls His believers to do all the time. Polish Christians are taking the teachings of Jesus seriously and living them out each day during this situation. “

More than 60% of the 110 Poland Baptist churches are responding to the needs of Ukrainian refugees, many of them in dramatic and radical ways.

At a warehouse in Chelm, donations for Ukrainians are coming in as fast as they are going out to Ukraine and to shelters across Poland. The deliveries continue even after Russia intensifies attacks on the western portion of Ukraine.

In north Poland, church members installed new insulation, air conditioning, heating, electrical lines and beds in an old summer camp to revitalize it to house refugees. Before the work was complete, they were housing 46 Ukrainians — all from one family. It can now house 60 more.

The work is tough, but it must be done. “You just do it because it’s the right thing to do,” said Lukas, who is leading the camp effort.

Near the Belarus border, a church is providing shelter for about 50 people and sending supplies into Ukraine despite increased Russian aggression. The effort is led in part by Natasha and Sergei, Ukrainians who came to Poland 10 years ago.

“We didn’t know why we were moving to Ukraine,” Sergei said. “We knew it couldn’t just be about money. Now we know.”

Natasha calls her parents, who remain in Ukraine, twice a day to find out if they’re still alive. After hearing their voices for a little while, she goes to work helping her countrymen. Between collecting and organizing supplies and registering people in the shelter, she moves quickly and calmly throughout the day.

“I see dread in their faces. I see their pain. I see tears in their eyes. I see the fear for their family they left behind. But I also see how much they feel secure here. When I hug them, they shiver with the happiness of being safe,” she said.

“I feel like I’ve done so, so little. I could have done so much more. But I try to do everything so they know we’ve done everything we can.”

With Baptists in Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Moldova taking center stage, Baptists from around the world are playing supportive roles by donating supplies, providing additional funding, praying, and volunteering. People speak English, Latvian, Russian, Polish, Icelandic, Ukrainian and more in the shelter.

Texas Baptist Men alone has committed $300,000 throughout the region to Ukrainian, Polish and Romanian Baptists, enough to support five shelters for six months. TBM has a team in Poland and is sending larger volunteer teams to serve in the Chelm church shelter near the Ukraine border.

“More than 1.5 million Ukrainians have sought safety in Poland,” said Mickey Lenamon, TBM executive director and CEO. “Baptists worldwide have joined together to meet their needs. TBM is honored to be part of that, whether it is through funding, sorting and loading donations in country, setting up beds, or even doing the little things that are needed like cleaning floors and toilets. We see what believers throughout the region are doing and are seeking to do likewise: follow Christ daily and share His love.”

The crisis will have a long-lasting impact on the region. Families are divided as fathers and brothers fight for their country. Many Ukrainians wonder if they will ever return home or if there is anything to return to.

Until they decide, Baptists across Poland are providing a place for them.

“The faces of Ukrainians arriving in Poland have the look of total despair, but I see the love of God poured out by the Polish people and see hope and comfort shining through,” said Gary Finley, part of a TBM team serving in Poland.

‘Jesus Means Everything to Me,’ These US Marines Recognize the Importance of Faith in Combat

0

To become a United States Marine, you must abide by the core values of honor, courage, and commitment.

And for some Marines, faith in God underlies those values, propelling them to accomplish their mission. CBN News traveled to South Carolina to learn about the role of faith in this elite fighting force.

“It just feels super honorable to have that title, ‘United States Marine’,” Jacob Watson told us a couple of days before graduating from U.S. Marine Corps boot camp.

He’s following in the footsteps of both his parents.

“It’s like something I will never forget or take for granted,” Watson shared. “Plus, some of the stuff that I’ve learned was like stuff I never thought I could do.”

“So, it was really a blessing to be able to conquer most of these things that I was afraid about at first, but thanks to the Marine Corps, I was able to do,” he continued.

Faith for the Fight

Watson points to his Christian faith for helping him stay the course.

“Without a doubt, the only, the only way I believe at least I got through this was faith in Christ ’cause a bunch of the stuff, like I said, mentally, was kind of scary and intimidating, but faith, I’ll tell you what, it gets you a long ways,” he emphasized.

It’s the same story for others at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina.

“Throughout boot camp, I read my Bible; and praying, that seemed to help me a lot,” said Taylor Warden, a new U.S. Marine.

“I remember thinking, ‘Maybe I can’t go through this?’ But I remember just thinking, ‘Well, if I have come this far, then God can definitely get me through the rest of it,'” LCPL Bernadette Pacheco shared.

“Through forming week, I was really just in my head really, and I needed some help,” explained Tyler Crawford, another new U.S. Marine. “We went to church, and I was praying to the Lord at night, and I was asking for some words of encouragement, and that next day, three songs back to back just, ‘You’re an overcomer; you’re in the fight ’til the final round’.”

“So I fought all the way throughout boot camp,” he added.

Chaplains Help in the Journey

There are nine chaplains on duty at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, and one of their roles is to make sure that every person has the right to practice his or her faith and is free of discrimination.

“I’m insuring that their First Amendment right, Constitutional right, is being protected to exercise their religion,” LT Dawn Ashley, a U.S. Navy chaplain serving the Marine Corps, told CBN News.

“I care for them, and that sometimes is through counseling, a lot of times through counseling here at Parris Island ’cause it’s boot camp, and they’re stressed a lot – a lot of depression, a lot of anxiety, so we care for them pastorally also,” she continued.

LTJG Ian Clark, another U.S. Navy chaplain serving the Marine Corps, shared a hope-filled response from a recruit.

“And she said, ‘I wrote this down when you said it, and I meditate on it; I pull it out when I’m having a hard time. I pull it out when things feel like they’re really closing on me, and it gives me a sense of hope,'” he said.

“And so as a chaplain, that was one of those moments where I realized that the work that we do really does impact people,” Clark continued. “It really does kind of buoy their spirit and help them grow in their walk of faith.”

“Those who we get the honor of serving here, regardless of their faith, we have found that spirituality plays an important part,” explained LT Camea Baksh, a U.S. Navy chaplain serving the Marine Corps.

“And for those that are Christians, we’ve really seen how they have received breakthrough from all of their past challenges, breakthrough while they’re here, and we see them really evolve to their higher level of self through Christ Jesus,” she continued.

“And we’re so honored that we get to love on them, to support them and look to walk alongside with them in this journey,” Baksh added.

“A lot of times they run away from their faith; they get here, and they think they can do it on their own,” commented LT Byron Johnson, another Navy chaplain serving the Marine Corps. “And they quickly understand that they can’t do it on their own.”

“They need God; they need that connection with God, and so a lot of them come back to their faith while they’re here,” he continued.

God’s Strength to Get Through

“Jesus means everything to me,” shared SSGT Evelyn Espinal.

As a drill instructor, Espinal must be tough as nails to train recruits. Still, she faces difficult times and shared how the love and strength of God gets her through.

“It was a very, very, very emotional time for me. I don’t cry often, but when it comes to God and Jesus, I bawl my eyes out, and I needed that,” she said. “I really needed that; I needed that strength to push through ’cause I was struggling.”

“It was my first year as a drill instructor; those are the hardest years,” she added.

‘Making an Impact’

CAPT Stephen Sigmon hopes how he lives his Christian faith will be seen and possibly inspire fellow Marines.

“Definitely not perfect by any means; no one really is, and Christ did not expect that out of folks either, but to be able to, maybe one person at a time, have someone look at you and say, ‘They are different; there’s something that’s maybe different about them,'” he said.

“And hopefully, letting some form of Christ in me manifest itself to be able to have an example that maybe I’m making an impact on one person in each unit that I go to,” Sigmon continued.

Allowing his faith to make an impact is an action Sigmon describes as fulfilling God’s calling to be the change or light in the world.
