Mystery Gold Coin Donation Gives Historic Church New Hope
A mystery gold coin donation has brought renewed hope to a centuries-old church in Lancashire, England, after it faced the possibility of closing because of costly repairs.
Leaders at St. Wilfrid’s Church in Melling discovered nine gold Britannia coins hidden beneath the altar while preparing for Good Friday prayers. The coins, which were later sold for nearly £30,000, came with a handwritten note from an anonymous donor identified only as “James, servant of the living God.”
The historic church had struggled to raise the £750,000 needed for essential repairs to its roof, stained-glass windows, and other parts of the building. With a congregation of just five people, church leaders feared they would have to close the church after more than 700 years of worship.
Rev. Jane Lee described the discovery as an answer to prayer. She said the unexpected gift arrived at the right time and would provide a strong foundation for future fundraising efforts and grant applications rather than simply covering day-to-day expenses.
Church officials believe the coins may have been left in 2022, as other churches in Lancashire reportedly received similar anonymous donations during that period. Although the identity of the donor remains unknown, the generosity has inspired renewed support from the wider community to preserve the historic place of worship.
The mystery gold coin donation has not solved every financial challenge facing St. Wilfrid’s Church, but it has provided fresh momentum for restoration efforts. Church leaders now hope the remarkable gift will encourage more people to support the preservation of the historic building for future generations.
